Acne. Simply say the word and watch your 16-year-old daughter run from the room! Acne is the bane of high school teens the world over. At Matsuda, we treat acne with a variety of approaches, but a new option called Acleara is showing great results.
What is acne?
Acne really comes down to the sebaceous glands becoming overactive. The sebaceous glands are responsible to creating oil that keeps the skin and hair from drying out. The pores on the skin are connected to the sebaceous glands by follicles. Within the follicles, oil produced by the sebaceous glands carries dead skin cells to the skin’s surface. If the glands are over-producing oil, as they do when inflamed by hormonal changes, they can become clogged. The result is pimples, blackheads, whiteheads…acne.
What’s behind acne?
Hormones are the cause of acne. Surging hormones during puberty make the sebaceous glands go nuts, over-producing oil and clogging the follicles that normally take the oil up to the skin to do its lubrication work. Bacteria get into the clogged pores causing inflammation, pus, and swelling.
Acleara is an FDA-approved, non-invasive method of treating acne. It uses pulsed light technology coupled with suction to open the skin’s pores, removing the excess oil and dead skin cells. The pulsed light kills the bacteria and reduces inflammation.
A small handheld device is placed over the target area. The vacuum technology clears the follicles and pores of the dead cells and oil, while the light then enters and kills bacteria. The light also reduces the production of oil in the glands.
