Back to Basics: Understanding Skin Care Products

affirm-laser-treatmentOur initial back-to-basics post talked about facial washing – how to choose the right facial wash and the reasons why you should never skip this step in your regular skincare routine. This second back-to-basics post will cover the most common types of skin care products and how they can help you achieve healthy and naturally glowing skin.

Cleansers – Their main function is to remove superficial dirt, oil, and makeup that water alone cannot. Cleansers help other skin care products such as toners and moisturizers work more effectively. They also help add extra moisture.

Exfoliators – Exfoliators remove what cleansers cannot get rid of, things such as dead skin cells. Regular use of exfoliators will reveal a fresh new layer of youthful skin. Some exfoliating products contain ingredients such as AHA (alpha hydroxyl acid) and BHA (beta hydroxyl acid) that also help prevent skin problems such as acne.

Toners – Toners are excellent for calming and softening the skin after using cleansers. They reduce pore size and skin redness.

Moisturizers – Moisturizers come in various forms (liquid, gels, creams) and are tasked with keeping the skin hydrated. Well-hydrated skin reduces the appearance of wrinkles, creases, and folds.

Sunscreen – Prolonged and unprotected sun exposure leads to premature skin aging, so regular use of sunscreen is a must. We recommend using broad-spectrum skin care products that protect against both UVA and UVB rays. Some moisturizers also contain sunscreen.

Acne Products – They usually contain benzoyl peroxide, an active ingredient that is effective against mild to moderate cases of acne.

Anti-Aging Products – The majority of these products come in creams, serums, or gels and mostly contain retinoids and antioxidants that help stimulate collagen production and skin renewal. A dwindling supply of collagen caused by aging causes the appearance of lines and wrinkles.

Skin Lightening Products – These products are intended for patients who have hyperpigmentation and other forms of skin discoloration.

There is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to a skin care routine. Consultation with an experienced and knowledgeable dermatologist will help you figure out which products are ideal for your skincare needs and issues.
