Come get anti aging injections in Honolulu, Hawaii

Botox Treatment Honolulu, HI | Dysport | XeominAs people age, wrinkles and fine lines start to appear at every corner of the face. Nowadays, there are various procedures that reduce the appearance of wrinkles and facial lines. These include botulinum toxin injections. Drs. Matsuda and Sheu in Honolulu use the latest skin treatments, like botulinum toxin to smooth wrinkles and reduce the effects of aging.

What is botulinum toxin (Botox, Dysport, Xeomin)?

Botulinum toxin is known to be a purified toxin. When it is administered orally, especially in large amounts, the substance can block the transmission of nerve signals coming from the brain into the muscle. This is called botulism or generalized paralysis in simpler terms.

However, it can be very useful and safe when used in minimal amounts. Specifically, when a tiny amount of botulinum toxin is injected into a certain facial muscle, it causes blockage but only on the targeted impulse of that specific muscle. This causes weakness and relaxation locally. Since the botulinum toxin serves as a blockade of the specific facial muscle, it immobilizes the cause of the wrinkles and unwanted lines on the face.

What is botulinum toxin therapy?

There are already available treatments that use botulinum toxin to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and lines on the face. These include injection therapy with Botox, Dysport, or Xeomin. Our dermatology clinic in Honolulu, Hawaii provides these services to people who wish to minimize their wrinkles and look younger.

Which areas may be treated with Botox or similar therapies?

To treat squint or frown lines between the eyebrows, the botulinum toxin is directly injected into the underlying muscle. This could also be used to treat the wrinkles at the corners of the eyes, forehead, and the ‘bunny lines of the nose. Excessive wrinkling around the mouth and unsightly chin dimpling may also be helped. The botulinum toxin can be used in positioning the eyebrows for cosmetic purposes as well.

When the muscle is relaxed and weakened, it is prevented from contracting. As a result, the appearance of undesirable facial expressions is prevented, too. The lines and creases on the face gradually smooth out and are hindered from forming again. Drs. Matsuda and Sheu feel that it is important to maintain the natural expression of the face.

How will my botulinum treatment go?

During the course of the therapy, Dr. Matsuda and Dr. Sheu inject tiny amounts of the botulinum toxin into a certain part of facial muscles to weaken them. This procedure is quick and almost painless. Furthermore, minimal recovery is needed. The effect of the treatment can be noticed within 3 to 5 days and may last for 3 to 4 months. After this time, the effects gradually start to fade since muscle action will begin to return by this time.

Patients often need repeated treatments but at different intervals. As an effect of repeated sessions, the targeted muscle may atrophy and weaken, resulting in longer lasting results and need for less frequent injections.

What are the side effects I should expect with botulinum toxin?

The side effects you may experience with this treatment occur close to the injection site. These include:

  • Redness and bruising
  • Infection
  • Pain at the injection site
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Headache
  • Muscle weakness
  • Allergy symptoms: itching, rashes, severe dizziness, difficulty in breathing

What should I consider before undergoing botulinum therapy?

Before undergoing such treatment, it is important to consult your doctor about all of your medical conditions, including whether you have a disease that affects your muscles and  nerves, have allergies to any botulinum toxin product, or have experienced any side effect from any other botulinum toxin in the past.  You should also be aware that there have been very rare reports of distant spread of the toxin effect, requiring hospitalization and if there is swallowing or breathing difficulties, this can be  life threatening.

Since the use of this drug may cause blurred vision, droopy eyelids, and muscle weakness, it is essential that you notify your doctor of your complete medical history, including:

  • Bleeding or bruising tendencies
  • Eye problems (such as poorly controlled glaucoma, drooping eyelids)
  • Previous eye or facial surgeries
  • Heart disease
  • Swallowing problems
  • Pregnancy, plans to get pregnant or if you are breastfeeding
