Clearing Up the Zits with Theraclear

acneHopefully, you’re not still believing that eating a chocolate bar or some potato chips with lunch will cause an acne breakout. For the longest time, acne has been a misunderstood condition that affects virtually every teenager, along with a few unlucky adults.

Truth be told — acne comes down to the sebaceous glands, nothing more, nothing less.

At Matsuda, we treat patients with acne every day. And we’re big believers in the success of the Theraclear system for effectively treating, and stemming, acne.

What causes acne?

Those sebaceous glands we mentioned above can be found all over the body in the hair follicles. Their job is to secrete oil to keep the skin and hair moist. Dead skin cells are also carried to the skin’s surface through these glands.

Everything is fine; our skin isn’t like the Mohave Desert, and our hair doesn’t continually look like we stuck it in the microwave. That is until puberty. When adolescent hormones go into overdrive, they trigger an overproduction of oil in the sebaceous glands. This can clog the glands. Now, the oil is stuck, as are the dead skin cells, and bacteria that are naturally living in the follicles. Since everything is clogged, the bacteria get busy, multiplying like a rabbit convention. The bacteria cause inflammation, making the skin above red, swollen, and full of whiteheads.

Treating acne

You can try all the facial scrubs and creams you want, but if they don’t go after the clogged glands and bacteria living in them, they’re not going to do any good. Most likely they’ll simply dry out the skin so much it can be painful.

Three kinds of drugs — benzoyl peroxide, antibiotics, and retinoids — have proven to be effective at killing the bacteria that is behind bacteria. But they are still drugs.

At Matsuda, we believe the Theraclear system is a better option for treating acne. The Theraclear acne system is a non-invasive, non-surgical method of treating acne. It utilizes pulsed light technology couple with suction to open the clogged pores, remove the oil, dead skin cells, and the bacteria.

How does Theraclear system work?

During our treatments, Dr. Matsuda or Dr. Sheu places the small handheld device over the target area. The handpiece provides gentle suction to open the clogged glands and suction out oil, excess bacteria, and dead skin cells. While this is happening, the handpiece also delivers short pulses of high-intensity therapeutic light that kills bacteria remaining in the glands. This light also causes a photodynamic reaction in the skin, lowering the production of oil. It also activates endogenous porphyrins that help calm the irritation in the skin.

What are the advantages of Theraclear for treating acne?

The Theraclear system at Matsuda has the following features:

  • Little or no discomfort
  • Minimal to no downtime
  • Reduces pore size
  • Doesn’t cause any scarring
