The Skinny on Skin Types (And Why You Should Know!)

Skin TypesThe skin is the largest organ in the body and the skin care industry is the most profitable segment in cosmetics. But finding what works for your skin isn’t usually what works for your co-worker — it’s usually dependent upon skin type.

Different skin types need different treatments or products to address skin care issues. Skin types can be categorized through the following:

Oily skin
Persistent breakouts and clogged, enlarged pores are the signs of oily skin. Your skin will generally look and feel greasy the entire day even without physical activity.

Dry skin
Anyone with this skin type may not struggle with chronic breakouts and clogged pores but they tend to have patches of dry skin with rough/uneven texture, persistent redness, and obvious flaking/chapping. Individuals with dry skin are more prone to wrinkling later in life.

Combination skin
This skin type is a combination of dry and oily. It could be mostly dry around the eyes and cheek areas while moderately oily in the T-zone (forehead, nose, chin, and sides of the mouth).

Sensitive skin
Individuals with sensitive skin have extremely dry skin that is easily irritated and inflamed. The skin is also prone to developing reddish, scaly patches, which most of the time can lead to breakouts.

Normal skin
This is the most ideal skin type — smooth, supple, with good elasticity. Men and women with this skin type need minimal skin care.
